Special Evening: Mindfulness Of Racism And Social Injustice with Ralph Steele.
Friday July 28th. 7:00pm - 9:00pm.
The Mindfulness Care Center presents an evening of mindful reflection and discussion on what fuels a society to support racism and social injustice with Ralph Steele.
Ralph Steele is the founder of Life Transition Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he serves as the guiding meditation teacher. He has practiced Theravadin Buddhist meditation for over three decades and taught since 1987.
The mission of Ralph’s Meditation Center is to eliminate the fear, ignorance and conditioning that fuel racism and social injustice within the individual as well as in relationships, families, communities, and the world at large.
Ralph will support everyone towards taking a deep inquiry look into ourselves to illuminate and heal the root beliefs that lead to racist behavior and social injustice; practice of various meditation techniques to learn to cultivate an awareness and compassion to support such internal change.
Excerpt by Ralph Steel from an article in the ’Turning Wheel’ 2003 The Journal of Socially Engaged Buddhism.
From 1979 to 1982, I decided to take a break from the Theravada practice and I began (up in the Northwest) to assist in coordinating most of Steven Levine’s retreats, and some of Ram Dass's retreats, waking up early in the morning as a bell-ringer. I’ll never forget one morning, stepping into this one building and ringing the bell, and hearing this person say, “Lord, you sent a nigger to wake me up!”
Because of my practice, I took a breath and continued walking. Was I being a do-gooder? No. [I was using my practice to work with my experience of that comment, and not react, while continuing on with my duties.] Having been a Vietnam veteran, I’ve seen a lot of people die. [From that perspective, I realized I’d rather wish kindness on this person, rather than arguing back.]
